Recommended U-Bolts And Plate For A 1-1/2" Wide Square Axle

Question:

Hello, I need a ubolt kit to go with SP-210275 Springs. I have 1.5 square axles. The current square ubolts are 4.5 in length. I started to purchase 115983 and individual ubolts but wanted to know if you offer a kit instead. Thank you.

Hey Roy,

The only U-bolt kit we currently only offer for 1-1/2" square axles is part # CE23102, which only has a 3-3/8" length so it likely wouldn't be the best option for you. Instead you'll want to order the 1-1/2" Square Trailer U-Bolts # SP01-120 and two of the U-Bolt Plate # 115983 to mount your axle to the leaf springs # SP-210275.

Kevin, Thank you for your assistance. The order arrived over the weekend. This morning I tested to see how everything fits and the #SP01-120 U-Bolts are too narrow to freely slide through the bolt holes in the #115983 U-Bolt Plate or freely slide over the axle. They are not off by much but I'm concerned about damaging the threads if I use force to get them through the bolt holes and/or axle. Shouldn't the u-bolts freely slide through the plate and past the axle? Regards, Roy

@Roy In my experience they usually do give you a bit of a fight but there's obviously a limit to how much fight they should give you. I typically can get them to pop right through the hole in the U-Bolt Plate # 1158983 by getting one side of the bolt in and then prying just a bit with my hand on the other side to pop it into the other hole. The U-Bolts # SP01-120 slightly angle in to better encompass the axle tube so that's why they're fighting the plate.

@KevinC Thank you. I can get the U-Bolt into the plate in the manner suggested. My bigger concern is seating the axle in the U-Bolt. I have some clean-up and painting to do on the trailer before I install the suspension components so we'll see how it goes in a day or two. Thanks & Regards. - Roy

@KevinC - I didn't have any issues with fitment of the U-Bolts and U-Bolt plates when I installed them on the free axle today but I did run into what I perceive to be a problem with the SP-210275 "4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 27" Long" mating to the axle. There is an indent or hole approximately 1/8 " deep in the square axle. The nut on the bottom of the leaf spring is 2/8" thick with another 1/8" thread from the bolt for a total of 3/8" sticking out from the leaf spring. There were no additional brackets or components in the hardware (leaf springs, u-bolts and u-bolt plates) I removed so I'm not sure what next steps are to finish bolting up the axle to the leaf springs. Assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. - Roy
